Having trouble getting your big ideas to market?
Maybe it's the way your team works.
Don't feel bad. Lots of teams don't work together as well as they could. In fact, it's surprising they work at all, considering the way disorganization, unrealistic schedules, competition and miscommunication plague the modern workplace. We don't have to tell you that, though—you're already living it. So what's the first step? It's time to get aligned.
Start with straight talk.
Ever notice how everyone's thinking it, but no one's saying it? Whether it's a concern about the business model being discussed or the fact that bosslady has a stain on her collar before the big presentation, most people don't know what they're allowed to say, or who they can say it to.
Causeit works with teams to get the whole story. We interview everyone and get clear on what a team needs to say to move things forward. Then we work with the team to say it for themselves in a professional, respectful group space—and make agreements about how to communicate going forward so that nothing important gets 'stepped over' ever again, and people's characters don't get attacked, either.
Get a new relationship to decisions.
Most people relate to decisions as if the best of all worlds is 'buy-in.' Examine that phrase for a moment, though: it means 'I see what's in it for me.'And that's the best we can do—most of the time people relate to decisions as if they just have to suck it up and comply or surrender. Maybe if they don't agree with an idea they'll just side-step what the team decided on and hope no one notices.
In high-performing teams, people relate to decisions differently. The start from "What's in it for the team's vision?" Why would they bother? Well, if they relate to the vision as something they're personally invested in, when the vision is fulfilled, they win personally.
Causeit works with your team to see the true cost of cumulative resistance to decisions made by (or handed down to) the team. When people see how much easier their work can be, and know that straight talk is acceptable, new things start to be possible. And it's often time for the team to create a vision everyone is excited about.
Build a vision—together.
In order for your team to produce results, you have to agree on what the results are. Despite how simple this sounds, it doesn't happen. Why? Often straight talk has been missing, the organization's habits seem completely inflexible, and it's hard to take the time to plan.
Causeit works with your team's newfound capacity for straight talk and ownership of decisions to discuss where the team might actually go, and begin to craft real-life, living plans that will get you there without 'playing it too safe' nor being unaware of the real constraints of your business environment. Over time, we coach your team members to integrate these plans and the new skills they've learned into their everyday work.
